October 6th Baking Event

Hello everyone, this is Shaun. I’d like to share a bit about the caking event we held on October 6th.


A group of students, along with a few others interested in the event, attended our first baking session at Kurara, starting around 1 p.m. My brother, Kieran Dean, led the session, teaching everyone how to make traditional Welsh cakes and marmalade tea cakes.


I’d like to thank everyone who came; you all made it a great event. It was not only enjoyable but also a big success. I hope you had a wonderful time, and I’m sure many of you are eager to do it again.


Things got a little hectic at times because I typically measure ingredients in grams, while my brother uses spoons. This led to us running out of a few ingredients, so I had to make a couple of quick trips to the store. Despite that, as you can see from the attached photos, everyone had a great time making the dishes. Many people weren’t familiar with Welsh cakes, so it was also a great opportunity to share their history while we made them.


For those who missed the event, here’s a quick introduction to Welsh Cakes:


Welsh Cakes come from my home country, Wales. They’re a cross between a cookie, a scone, and a pancake, but they have a unique taste and texture. They’re about the size of a thick cookie, made with ingredients similar to a scone, but unlike scones, they’re cooked in a pan like pancakes. Welsh Cakes are sweet, but not overly so. The recipe uses simple ingredients like flour, sugar, milk, and butter, but making them is quite time-consuming, which is why they’re considered a special treat. Since they’re cooked in a pan, Welsh Cakes are usually handmade, and there aren’t many commercial producers. Traditionally, they were made on a hot bake-stone, though iron pans are more commonly used today. Over time, Welsh Cakes have been known by different names, including the Welsh terms “cage bach” and “picau ar y maen,” as well as “Griddle Cakes,” “Welsh Tea Cakes,” and “Welsh Miner Cakes.”
